Absolutely. During the first year or two of my undergrad, at some point or another, I would get confused about something being discussed in class, whether it be a specific term or concept/ theory, and was absolutely terrified to speak up and ask a question. this led to quite a bit of figuring out on my own and ultimately leaving out crucial information during the self teaching process. For example, my pre-calc professor was not the greatest teacher (someone who should have retired a LONG time ago) and I ended up having to teach myself the book because I was too afraid to ask for help/ explanations during class. Because of this, i had only taught myself how to do the material, but lacked an understanding of the material. My work around for this became writing my questions down and approaching the professor/ TA after the class/section and speaking to them one on one. I actually ended up loving this method because the teachers weren't constricted by taking up class time with explanations and they could go even more in depth with you (they also love when students take an interest and talk to them outside of class about the material and not just why they got a bad grade on something!).
