*Feeling* hopeless is very understandable in your situation and if someone suggests otherwise, they are the problem. Notice I said feeling hopeless - I did not say “there is no hope” The good news is that you have been trying things that will never really work. Most speech therapists have no training in treating dysfluency and their techniques, at best, will not help at all. Also, Before putting hope into a suggestion you got from a random stranger on Reddit, do the following : - ask if it’s helped them ever, and if so, how long (if it helps for a few weeks and then stops, it’s not worth it bc it’a probably just masking the problem) - ask for a source to see if it aligns with current best practice by SLP’s who are *actually trained to treat dysfluency*. - if the suggestions seem *unattainable* bc they boil down to “stop thinking/worrying about the thing you cannot stop thinking/worrying about”, ignore the “advice” - if the advice requires buying a very expensive product or trying a dangerous medication, ignore it - please do not be fooled by people who sound knowledgeable and wise if they cannot produce any info to back up their claims. As you and others know, there IS harm in “trying something” that has no chance to work (or that can make things worse) bc it further increases hopelessness. Here’s more good news - there are habits to develop that will work if you put in the effort. Most of these ideas will be the opposite of what you’ve been doing, and are scary. - practice voluntary repetitions in front of mirror bc blocking occurs bc you are trying *too hard* to hide repetitions. Build up to doing VR in phone calls and then in person - when talking, make regular eye contact BEFORE you start speaking - begin on an a regular exhale - begin slowly and enunciate (not robotic or monotone - just clear and with comfortable pauses). This needs to be combined with other habits in order to help Sources : https://stutteringtherapyresources.com/pages/about-us https://www.stuttering-specialist.com/about-us https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tim-mackesey https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AyeJ5t22mUE (this is a formal presentation given at NSA)
