I graduated with a CS degree in December 2020 and didn't get hired until the following July. I went through quite a few interviews. At first, I didn't disclose my stutter during the interviews and just hoped I could get through them fluently enough that it wouldn't be noticed. But then, I had a true disaster of an interview. It was an entry-level position for a pretty high-pressure agricultural research organization at my university. There were SEVEN people on the interview panel. This was during Covid quarantine so it was a Zoom interview. The guy that would have been my supervisor was asking me some pretty technical questions. I started to stumble. I couldn't fully explain an answer to an easy question. After that, I just kind of fell apart. Following that interview, I had to change how I mentally approach my speech during job interviews. When I would introduce myself, I started telling the interviewers that I have a speech impediment that will probably come up at some point and I appreciate their patience and understanding. This really helped my confidence. Then, I had a Zoom interview followed by an in-person interview at the place that finally hired me. It just so happened it was for another agricultural research organization at my university. I have no doubt that the terrible interview I had gave me the experience that allowed me to nail this one. I should also note that I applied for the position in April 2021 and didn't hear anything until July 2021. Funny enough, shortly after I accepted the position I heard back from another company that had rejected me earlier but wanted to interview me for another position. So, don't lose hope. You just might hear back from someplace you may have written off.
