Self monitoring causes a viscous cycle for us stutterers. The more we focus on HOW we speak, the higher probability of blocks, and we self sabotage by continually self monitoring. This cycle makes the block longer and harder to get out of. One strategy I use is to stop trying to push through a block, and just pause, breathe in and start again GENTLY speaking on the breathe out. Works every single time.
