Being in high school.. with a stutter… is and was hell… we all understand and your feelings toward this situation are 100% valid. Sadly, almost no one other than PWS will be able to relate to you. Stuttering is one of the few disabilities that is so PUBLIC but does not affect your cognition at all…. However since it is so public, people make assumptions. I can say that life improves significantly after high school and even more so after college. College was where I found therapy that actually worked for me. I went to Purdue and they surprisingly had a lot of professors doing research on stuttering and I was able to get free access to group speech therapy from SLPs and master students. It truly helped me reframe my perspective on my stutter and increase my fluency. Most SLPs have no idea how to work on stuttering. When looking at colleges, look into ones that might do research into stuttering as well? You may be able to access support specifically tailored for you then. If you’re interested to talk about it more, message me! I’m 31 now and work as a clinical director, manage 100 people, talk to parents and doctors all the time and have to do a lot of speeches in front of our staff. I still stutter, even on my name, but I make it through just fine.
