The biggest thing I have learned over the years (all 50 of them) is to just stop. No matter how hard I would persevere and repeat myself or breathe my way through a block, the only way I learned to combat those types of blocks was to just stop. And it is insanely hard to do. Everyone is so quick to say stop, or take a breathe, the often dreded "relax", or attempt to finish my thoughts. This does nothing but tick me off internally and present a situation of total awkwardness externally. With practice though, and a good vocabulary, I have taught myself to just flat out stop, pick a new word, and move on. It takes a lot of practice, but as with most stutterers, there are certain words you can get hung up on. For years I could not say the word "hello" as a greeting on the telephone. I turned into a "good morning," "good afternoon," or a "yes" person. You know inherently exactly which words are triggers for you. Instead, just learn a new word. It takes a lot, and I mean a lot of practice. So much practice that you will probably find new words to get stuck on.
