Accommodations. If one is considered disabled (and I know many people don’t like word disability) a PWS is entitled to accommodations at work, which levels the playing field for a PWS to do the same job. For example, a PWS can ask for extra time when he/she has to do a presentation. Or you can asked to make phone calls in a place that is not an open floor plan. I always feel self conscious when coworkers hear me stuttering or the phone. The key here is you have to disclose your disability, which can feel scary, as we may think we’ll be judged. The employer can legally ask about your disability in the interview phase. That is illegal. Lastly stuttering can be easily accommodated with little or no $$ to the employer. It’s not like having to install a wheelchair ramp or buy adaptive computer tools. The key is to be open and not be afraid of disclosing your disability. If you don’t you lose out on those easy accommodations that will help you easily do the job and be as productive as the next guy.
