Like others have said, when stuttering is used as a prop for comic relief, I find it very offensive. Especially if that character is made to look incompetent. My Cousin Vinny for example. If you haven't seen it, it's a courtroom comedy. One of the lawyers, who ultimately get's fired from the case, doesn't stutter at all when talking to his clients but can't hardly get a word out when court is in session. He later says, "I get a little nervous" when his clients ask him what happened. The whole thing just sucks. Especially watching it with other people and suddenly everything just becomes real awkward. There are very few movies that I feel accurately represent a person who stutters. Most of the time we're made to look foolish for a laugh. We're not always made to look incompetent. The movie Pearl Harbor had a character who stuttered. They didn't portray him in a negative way. But it was still used for comedic relief. I never watched The Kings Speech and I don't plan to either. Frankly, I'm tired of seeing people pretend to be us. To me, it's the stutterer's version of "black face." It's "stutter face." And I'm sick of it. There are a lot of people who stutter in the world. Instead of having someone pretend to stutter, they need to wake up and start putting people who actually stutter in those roles.
