This is absolutely true. My dad stutters: he's an absolutely brilliant man, but he often gets treated like he's dumb because of the way he speaks. He's a university professor/research scientist, but also has always farmed as well. When we were growing up he always got teased mercilessly by other farmers and people in our small town, but he minded that a lot less than the pitying looks and tactful disdain he got from other professionals.
