Yeah, I try my best to avoid substituting. I find it can cause confusion in both me and my listeners. You sometimes stumble through a sentence and lose coherence. It's sometimes handy, in a pinch, but most of the time I want to be saying what I initially wanted to be saying. It shouldn't become a habit, I think - and besides, it's not a guarantee for fluency anyway.
