I don't entirely agree. I think it depends on how it is you aim to control your stutter. If it's via blocking and avoiding words and sounds, then yes that will prove disastrous. But employing active non avoidance mechanisms, and techniques such as prolongations and voluntary stuttering can and do work to exercise control over your stuttering. And over time one can begin to let go and sound more 'fluent'.
