I don’t think that exposure therapy, basically what you describe, works only by itself. Because I have found that if you regularly expose yourself to situations where it turns out bad, you might get a reverse effect like you said. Therefore I think you need to work on yourself alone by your self (working both on yourself and your stutter, cuz remember these are not the same thing!) and then go out and get positive experiences.
