I'm in my mid 40's. Mine was bad as a child and that was rough, but it got better over the years to the point where some new friends in high school didn't know I had a speech problem. College was rough and I dropped out after a year. My speech really got worse during that period. I got various jobs in retail over the next 8 years and the stress didn't help. I always felt like I was a child talking to adults. I eventually got a job in an office setting and that helped. Beyond that, as I got older I stopped caring about it as much. Sort of took the approach that if someone doesn't want to be my friend because of my speech they saved me the time. For about 10 years now I only notice I'm stuttering when I really get hung up on something and that's pretty rare. Sometimes I feel like I leaned too far into the "I don't care what others think about me" attitude, but I think it helped my speech. I feel blessed that I have a relatively minor case and some of the stories I read on this sub bring tears to my eyes. Mine started to get better in my 30's as my stressors went away and I hope yours also gets better.
