Possibly losing my job because of my stutter Hi everyone—new to this sub, so nice to meet you all and here’s hoping I don’t break any sub rules. So I’ve had a stutter since I was really young, I’ve done speech therapy etc., and it’s helped the severity but hasn’t gotten rid of it. I’ve mostly learned to roll with it with a sense of humor, but I have my bad days. Anyway, today, despite being 30 and having worked since I was 16, I had my first time losing my job thanks to my stutter. I’ve been working as a hostess in a high volume well-known NYC restaurant since the beginning of August. I was called into the manager’s office today—the first time I’ve ever gotten feedback beyond “Don’t put __ in __ place”—and they told me that my stutter was a problem, and the implication was that they would fire me if they could. However, since 1) stuttering is considered a disability under NY State law, and they don’t want that kind of lawsuit, and 2) I’ve been a really hard worker with a good attitude who always helps out the team and has never had attendance issues, i.e., legit reasons they could fire me, they’re trying to make me take a role that pays much less and is less communications based. I’d try to keep my current position, but more than likely, if they want me out of the job, they’ll cut my hours down to next to nothing and force me to find another job. So my options are take the demotion or hit the pavement and work elsewhere. I’ve worked in restaurants in NYC before; I’ve worked in corporate companies, everything in between. I’ve never been treated like this before because of a physical problem I have literally no control over. It was deeply humiliating. (Also how did it take them 3 months to bring this up???!) Thanks for letting me rant. Anyone else deal with this type of BS before?
