I can't see any easy solution to the phone situation. That's why I really like e-mails or chats. I guess maybe if video calling got more common, we could use hand signals (or at least, there'd be a visual indication of struggle). Silence, by taking away the very channel of communication that phoning relies on (audio), has no remedy. I mean, pressing buttons would just make thing more confusing.
