AtomR, My psychotherapist is a Ph.D. in clinical psychology. She knows all the therapeutic techniques but in my particular case, she chose the Psychodynamic method. I originally sought therapy for lifelong anxiety and depression. She has a hunch it was caused by my childhood because my life, my marriage, was happy and stable. My therapist was also able to prescribe medication. In my state, Utah, an APRN an advanced practice registered nurse can prescribe. They have extensive training. She exercised her training and prescribed medication and we engaged in deconstructing my childhood. It turned out I’d been carrying latent anger and resentment for being abused, ignored, and marginalized. There was so much more, including being a disappointment because I stuttered. I received no speech therapy and I believed I had been ‘given’ to a molester because I was expendable. AtomR, stuttering has various causes both physical and emotional. Mine was purely emotional. I was fortunate to find the exact right therapist. I suddenly realized I didn't stutter anymore. It was as if I‘d always been fluent. If you suspect your stuttering might have been caused by a random traumatic event or an abusive childhood, examining the possibility that your fluency was affected, please seek psychological counseling.
