I’m a construction site manager and probably make up to 50 telephone calls a day including some difficult calls full of confrontation. Growing up, speaking on the telephone was a massive trigger for my stutter. I used to dread making any kind of phone call and of course that would set me off and make my stutter even worse. I remember times sitting in my site office in tears at the thought of having to make an awkward call to a contractor that had previously made comments about my stutter. My technique is to not over think the call (I used to rehearse how I was going to start speaking, but I found that just made things worse). I punch the number in, count down and explode into the call with plenty of confidence. I concentrate on the vowel and not the starting consonants (B + D words set me off) and dodge and restart in an un-obvious way if I’m struggling. And just practice, practice and practice until it’s second nature. Now, I find telephone calls far easier to deal with than stuttering in any face to face conversation. I did have a bad relapse the other day though which prompted me to join this sub. I’m interested to see how other people deal with it.
