Your saying that he'll think your making up an excuse? Well he'd only think that if he doesn't know much about stuttering. If he knows it's something you can't help doing then he won't be saying that. It's up to you eductate him. Tell him how long you've been doing it, if it runs in your family, the current neurological research finding about stuttering etc..
