Why is stuttering the one disability it's still okay to mock? Someone had mentioned on my last post that a lot of people are more accepting of and exposed to disabilities now, but I really think stuttering is the one exception. I have an uncle who is blind, and he has a way better social life than I do. Everyone is nice to him and fascinated by the ways he does stuff. Nobody would ever laugh at him, and if he was struggling with anything definitely no one would find it comic. For some reason people think stuttering is funny and think it's okay to make fun of stutterers. Do you think it's just not enough exposure? I know stuttering sounds and looks stupid, but is it really just that comedic that people can't help but laugh? Do people seriously think we talk like this on purpose just for the heck of it? Why is mocking stuttering given a pass while it's taboo to mock other disabilities? Any thoughts? People don't seem to think stuttering is a real disability or take it seriously, but not being able to communicate or socialize normally is a huge disadvantage in life.
