**Question**: How can I send an instruction to my subconscious brain to start executing the speech plan? **My reply:** Simply let your subconscious mind know when it should start speaking. In the exact same way how you let your brain know when it should start moving your arm muscles, feet, hands etc. Note: your body and mind already knows how to "instruct". It is instinctive. You can already do it so it's not something you need to "learn". In speaking, there are 2 elements: 1. - feedforward system (i.e., the forward flow of speech): This is the part where you let your mind know when it should start speaking. Both non-stutterers and stutterers MUST do this (regarding the feedforward element) 2. - feedback system (i.e., the disruption of the flow of speech). This is the part where - in people who stutter - their subconscious brain holds back speech in response to an error-avoidance mechanism (e.g., avoiding conditioned stimuli to execute the speech plan). Conclusion: So. "instructing" is assumed to result in executing the speech plan. Of course, unless the second element (disruption) is disrupting the forward flow of speech. Practically speaking: In people who stutter - we have learned to RELY ON NEEDS (e.g., more or less tension/force) (to execute the speech plan). If one of those many NEEDS replace "instructing", the forward flow of speech is disrupted. Summary: So, if we want to address both elements (#1 and #2). One possible solution is: Replace those NEEDS (to execute the speech plan) with "instructing". \~\~ Try it out this week
