I have a stutter that comes and goes, and it was worse when I was a kid. It's taken years of therapy and different techniques, and it's gotten better, but I still have trouble with blocked words. Once a word gets stuck, it REALLY gets stuck. Stuttering hasn't really gotten in the way of my socialization, but it certainly has discolored some interactions that would inevitably stick out in my mind. Something in the other person's eye, something in their face changes when they have to watch me choke on a word. It only gets worse when they keep pressing on while I try to respond. Funilly enough, my own name has a hard start, so whenever someone asks "who are you?" more often than not I get stuck on it. What really gets me is when they try and be funny and follow up with "what, did you forget your name?" I get it's a jab, but it's a very sensitive spot for me. It's only happened a couple times, but you can see how that'd discourage socializing. It's a very personal perspective, but that's why I care.
