Hi! Previous research has largely focused on listener reactions to self-disclosure statements. For example, listeners are more likely to assign positive character traits such as friendliness to adults and children who use self-disclosure statements versus those who do not. I am more interested in the speaker-related benefits of self-disclosure. Clinically, we an increase gain confidence and reduction speaking anxiety for many adults and children who self-disclose stuttering across speaking contexts; however, research has not explored this area enough. Our goal is to understand how people who stutter use this strategy and what benefits it provides them in order to inform speech-language pathologists and people who stutter who may be considering using self-disclosure as a strategy.
