I have 1 friend I met organically through mutual friends and he has a very mild stutter where mine is more moderate. We didn't talk about it for a long time but I could tell he had a mild stutter. A few years ago, I was going through major health issues which made my stutter quite severe and I told him then and now we talk about it often. It's really nice to have someone in your life who understands who isn't an SLP. He told me that one of his childhood teachers told his parents he would need assistance all his life and would never get better. With speech therapy, his stutter went from severe to mild. He's a lawyer now. TL;DR Don't ever take one person's opinion of you to heart. You can be whatever you want!
