My mom has severe mental illness, like full blown schizophrenia. My super Christian conservative family will basically just yell at her tell her to stop being crazy, congrulate themselves, and then blame her for not listening to reason. So ya any disorder that they cannot see, does not exist to them. The ONLY thing you can do is pay them no mind.
