Few questions and advice about stuttering Hello! To be brief, I'm writing a novel and one of my characters stutters ; I want it to be realistic, so as not to fall into caricature. I'm in the middle of the rewrite, and I'm just rewriting a scene with this character. I don't stutter and I don't know anyone around me who does, so I thought about asking for advice at that moment ; I don't known why I didn't think of it before... I imagine stuttering is a complicated thing and it's can be different for each person, so I expect to have different answers to theses questions 😊 My first question is : The character doesn't stutter all the time, this mainly happens to her when she's uncomfortable, stressed or in the presence of people with whom she's not comfortable ; but apart from that she never, or almost never stutters. So, is it realistic? My second question is about psychological state and substance, in particular alcohol : Can a psychological state (for exemple being angry, sad, or happy) change the behavior of the stuttering? Same question about substance such as alcohol, cigarettes or drugs, Can this have an impact on the stuttering? (the character doesn't smoke and don't do drugs, so the question is mainly about alcohol) Thanks for taking the time to read as well as to respond 😇
