I failed German at school (my stutter made classes very stressful) and thought I would never be able to learn a language, even though it was a dream of mine. At the age of 22 I moved to Spain and threw myself in at the deep end - I knew no Spanish at all. I found that the process of learning (and struggling with my stutter) in Spanish actually helped me feel more comfortable speaking English and I ended up working as a teacher being paid to speak all day. After living in Spain for 11 years I am now (dys)fluent in Spanish and know more of the language than I ever dreamed I would. Whilst living there I did my PhD on this topic because I am passionate about other people who stutter having access to inclusive teaching and being able to enjoy language learning despite the challenges stuttering can bring. Now I'm 35 and have just moved to Portugal - I know hardly any Portuguese and my stutter is more frequent when I do try and use the little I know. It's a very difficult challenge but I hope to be able to be more comfortable in the language as time goes by. Sending all of you who are learning/using different languages my very best and lots of encouragement. Stuttering can make things more challenging, but stutterers can be very effective language learners!
