It generally doesn't bother me at all when people finish my sentences for me. But I know we're all different! I'd just pose it like, hey. I know you're only looking out for me and you have my best interests at heart. But please, you need to let me try. Maybe even make a 'signal' so you can request his help if you need it. Eg.
