Mild stutter that is now pretty invisible to others (it’s still there though). Had speech therapy when I was younger but nothing since before high school. I read up on different experiences with stuttering and the situations they didn’t stutter: while reading a script, singing, talking to animals, talking through a puppet, on a microphone, etc. Through that, I kinda identified what kind of stutterer I was. Script reading was out (which was a big bummer) but singing was good. Sang a bunch at home (to music), pushed myself into karaoke until I was eventually offered a job doing it in Montana. Mic work was still a challenge but that’s where a thesaurus is great. I might get stuck at “bought” but “purchased” was easier. Learning the phrasing and rhythm of songs helped a lot. Later, I got into stand up comedy (learning various rhythms and repeating things to myself), radio/podcasting and practiced reading news articles to myself. I also liked mimicking accents (alone mostly but sometimes amongst friends) I heard on BBC podcasts. Pretty naturally, I consistently found low risk public challenges to push myself. I still volunteer often to read aloud while in groups. I practice my diction and phrasing. I’ve also taken my stutter popping up again as a sign that something is off. My confidence isn’t good and I’m feeling vulnerable. Then I’ll try and address that (and the rest is for a different subreddit :) ) TL;DR find the areas your speech is the best, playfully practice and expand that comfort area, imitate others’ speech, phrasing and dialects. Know you’re making progress.
