Three different stories related to stuttering and confidence - which do you prefer? Hello dear people. A while ago I posted a story for an animation project in design school. (https://www.reddit.com/r/Stutter/comments/698wrt/a_little_animated_story_about_stuttering_a_few/) The feedback I got from that was very helpful. It's been a while since then; I've had some down time on my project. However, I'd like you all to read 3 different stories and tell me which you prefer. They're all variations of the same basic idea or theme. I'm using the male gender for the reason that most PWS are male (as well as for readability). 1. One day, a person who is fed up with their stuttering decides to pack his bags to travel around the world in search of a cure for their stuttering problem. On his journey he encounters many self-professed experts, each selling their own tricks. Secret breathing exercises, potions, devices. The stutterer tries them all. Each of the tricks help for a while, but it is never long before the stuttering returns to its familiar strength. In the crowd listening to another of a trickster’s sale pitches, a dog appears next to the stutterer. It stays there, and will not leave the stutterer afterwards. But, stutterer doesn’t mind its company – and as the search for a cure continues, their companionship turns into friendship. Just as before, the offered solutions end up in disappointment. The dog listens as the stutterer expresses his despair. It’s not long before the stutterer reaches the end of his rope. He has no hope or money left. The dog then seems acutely aware of his friend’s feelings. It starts acting strangely – until it transforms into a human being. The stutterer is shocked. The dog-person then says to her: you’ve been looking for the solution to your stuttering problem everywhere, while you spoke so fluently to me. Recognize that there is nothing wrong with you: whether you speak with fluency or not. Be as indifferent towards the people as you were to me, and you will forget about the problem as you have imagined it. The stutterer remembers that he did in fact speak fluently every time he made his complaints to the dog. The dog, now a human being, is here to testify for that. The stutterer then resolves to speak to people as he does to the dogs, with indifference – stuttering or not. And so he does, until he forgets about his problem. 2. A man (PWS) is sailing far out from main land when a storm brews up, causing a massive wave to crash his boat. Holding onto the wreckage, he drifts ashore an uninhabited island. As he’s struggling to survive on the island, he meets with different wild animals. Time goes by, and friendships develop between the man and the animals. He does not stutter as he speaks with them. The anxiety that surrounded his speech has been muted by the confidence from the instinctual way of living on the island. Eventually it so happens that he does return to the civilized world, after a searching crew locates his shack out on the beach. As he attempts to settle back into the old way of living, the stuttering returns haphazardly. However, with the memory of the free and confident lifestyle of the island, he is never completely fazed by this. He has realized that freedom of expression is a possibility - his memory continues to serve as an inspiration. 3. One (hot, humid, and full moon) day, an office clerk (PWS) wakes up for his work. On the walk towards the office, he encounters an acquaintance. They have a quick chat. The acquaintance acts impatiently as the stuttering clerk struggles through small talk. They say their goodbyes, and the clerk leaves with a feeling of agitation at his disfluency and at the impatience of his acquaintance. A similar situation occurs at work: colleagues appear to have little time for drawn out how-are-yous and cut short any chance of conversation. A cocktail of frustration is stirring in the clerk. By the time of the afternoon coffee break, he’s just about to burst. When he’s asked about the proceedings of his work, he’s spoken over by another clerk, and internal fury flows outward. Raising the volume of his voice, he doesn’t hold back on any blocks, and he expresses all that he means to say. People around are awestruck, and quietly return to their desks. It is something very satifisying to speak without holding back. He speaks almost furiously on the street, in the pub, at home. It's addictive. He returns home feeling more confident than ever. And he soon falls into a deep sleep. -- It'd be greatly appreciated if you, the people of this subreddit, told me which of the stories has your preference! Thank you, and have a good day
