Would you also agree with these negative effects of speaking slowly? Negative effect of speaking slowly: * you reinforce anticipation because you NEED to speak slowly (reassurance-seeking: relying on a technique instead of automatic natural speech). You disconfirm faith in your body to automatically stop compulsion, because you rely on speaking slowly -> you disconfirm expectancy that you cannot speak without compulsion if you don't speak slowly * by saying that you NEED to speak slowly, you reinforce a reason to justify (or choose) compulsion, whenever you don't speak slowly * by saying that you NEED to speak slowly, you make the stutter disorder real in your mind. After all, you NEED to speak slowly so the stutter must be true, fearful and your true intentions => you attach importance by giving a meaning to triggers * Imagine, you encounter a feared letter and your default mentality is "it makes sense that I just now stuttered, because I didn't speak slowly" then you condone choosing to do compulsion. This is exactly what mainstream PWS do, wouldn't you say so? * you solve it with fire. I mean, you solve 'speaking too fast' with 'speaking too slow'. It's not about adding a technique or labeling. It's about removing techniques and not having an opinion - to do compulsion. * you could argue that speaking slowly gives you more time to ruminate and do fight or flight response. Because if you speak at a normal pace, you are more focused on the message and on effectively getting the message across. * if stutterers had a positive developing mindset towards stuttering, they would have removed stuttering already. Since stutterers tend to hold on to their stutter identity, you could argue, that "speaking slowly" becomes the default mentality over time and then you experience a relapse. The positive effects start to reduce. * by speaking slowly you reinforce unnatural speech and because PWS hold on to their stutter mindset, they then make a condition: "If it's okay to speak unnaturally: 'by speaking slowly', then perhaps I can add more unnatural behavior." * feeling ok to take up space also has a counterpoll: speaking slowly could lead to feeling that you take up too much space. There is a reason why PWS don't prefer to apply methods from speech programs, because they are of the mind that it takes too long. * being more attractive also has its counterpoll: speaking at a normal pace is much more attractive. Same goes for 'the right to talk', a PWS holds on to his stutter mindset so if you speak too slow, then there is a higher chance that you do not accept 'the right to talk' compared to speaking at a normal pace * taking much time for breathes gives less anxiety, if you speak more words after a breath at a normal pace
