It's got to do with what we could call "donning a mask". Problem is, as soon as you get too acquainted with that "mask", the stuttering can jump right back in. More generally, there are many different contexts we can speak in, and not all of them are as taxing on us as the ones we tend to stutter most in. Sometimes we can "trick" ourselves into feeling like someone else, sort of.
