I have always thought of it as both mechanical and psychological. Everyone has stuttered at sometime when anxious. Doing a physical task + anxiety = greater chance of error. Like walking on a balance beam might be easy alone but difficult when feeling self conscious and afraid of falling. IMO people who stutter are walking in a narrower balance beam so to speak. When they’ve fallen off before they become more self conscious making them more likely to fall (stutter) again.
