I was actually in Japan a couple weeks ago and was able to use a little bit of what I’ve learned. I’ve only been studying for about 2 years but I found when it came to speaking with natives, at least with simple phrases, I was pretty fluent. I had the same concerns as you before I went but everyone there is very patient and won’t expect you to speak perfectly so don’t feel pressured. As you’re there longer you will get more and more comfortable. By the end of my trip I was doing most of the talking for the group I was with since I was one of the only ones who knew any of the language. It may be rough at the start but you’ll settle in quick! Also I plan to do study abroad there next year so I’m excited for you to be able to go now!
