I think that voices are kind of a bimodal distribution, in that its totally possible for a female to have a deep voice, but the vast majority of female voices are higher and vice versa. It'd just be easier to pass and would probably help me feel more "belonging" if I had a feminine voice. I don't think it's as prescriptive as you describe it
