Ohhh I gotcha now. I was more picturing someone knowing you have a disability and making fun of you for that. I don’t really fault anyone who awkwardly laughs although by definition they are ignorant of stuttering if they laugh in your face when you stutter. I agree with you that those people aren’t doing it maliciously but it still hurts. I think it’s important that we carefully pick and choose which peoples’ opinion we care about. I actually carry around a business card in my pocket that says “My name is X. I have a severe stutter and sometimes communicate by writing things down.” And I pull that out whenever I’m stuttering and someone is looking at me like I have three heads. It’s always immediately defused the situation for me. Lately I’ve been trying to stutter in front of people more and it’s amazing how many people do know someone who stutters. I ski a lot by myself so I’m often sitting next to strangers on the lift for several minutes at a time. Almost nobody even mentions my stutter, they just talk to me normally. It’s great. I wish I tried this more when I was younger.
