It’s definitely isolating! Please DM me or whatever if you’d like to keep in touch. That’s unfortunate about Mayo, I asked UW which is my major hospital and their Speech Pathology program has tons of great programs for developmental stutters, but currently explores no research with neurogenic stutters 😩 my SLP has never seen a “true” neurogenic stutters before and it’s like cool, unique, but also, I’d really like to approach my former baseline. My MRI showed nothing either, despite the fact that I developed a lazy eye at the same time as the stutter. Like who develops a lazy eye and a stutter during their 30s?!? Some of the time don’t bother with speech, I’ll just make hand gestures cause it’s not worth the trouble of coordinating vocalization 😢 though that’s typically something I only do towards the end of the day or if I’ve been speaking quite a bit. It’s a challenge because neurogenic stutters, as opposed to developmental stutters, the elongations and breaks happen throughout the word and it’s so challenging to string multi-syllable words together. That’s unfortunate, but I’m not super shocked. I’m learning that every medical discipline can have neuro added in front and the longer the name, the longer the wait time for medical specialists. It’s fiinnneee. I’m honestly kinda grateful it was a work injury so my workplace Workman’s Comp place they use assists with much of the scheduling. It is always a challenge and annoying though to make calls having to clarify that “no, I have good service, my line isn’t breaking up, I have a stutter”. Definitely wishing you luck with speech therapy! It didn’t reduce any of the breaks and elongations, but I did learn methods to shorten the breaks and elongations. They’re there, but less noticeable and less likely to interfere with my fluency. I’m jealous! When I get angry or anxious i can only get out bits of words. It’s seriously a challenge as I do have an anxiety disorder that predates the stutter. While my GAD is relatively well controlled, when it does flare, it’s made all the more debilitating by not being able to vocalize well. You’ve got this!
