I don't think reading out loud to yourself is going to help any. Most stutterers never stutter when alone anyway. The one thing has has helped me some is gentle onsets, an exercise I learned from a therapist a long time ago. Basically you practice with whatever sounds you think you are having trouble with, and try to stretch the initial sound. It is easier for some sounds than others. For example, with an "M" sound, it is very easy. You just basically hum your way into making the "m". The idea is that whenever you have a block, you have a way to ease into the word slowly and that can release the block. It won't always sound completely natural when you do this, but believe me, a little hum before you say something is way better than just blocking for several seconds and contorting.
