I actually have spasmodic dysphonia (aka laryngeal dystonia), and for the longest time I believed I had a stutter. But after going to stutter support groups I realized I didn't sound anything like that. It was so confusing. So, I went to a laryngologist and was diagnosed with SD. It's considered a neurological disorder, there's not much known about it, or what causes it, but my vocal chords spasm involuntarily when I speak. It's especially frustrating because it flares up during certain times, and is not so bad other times. I can speak more fluently when I'm feeling confident, or if I've been drinking! But if I'm anxious or feeling depressed my vocal chords go bonkers. Do you suspect you may have spasmodic dysphonia?
