Oh that shit would make me mad. We don’t want people to feel sorry for us! And it’s not our parents fault! And speech therapy helps but it doesn’t make it go away. I was in speech therapy from kindergarten to 8th grade and went back as an adult in my early 20s. My stutter has been the worst it’s been this year. There’s a lot of backstory here, but the last few weeks I’ve felt more like “myself” after years of not, and it’s improving. But it’s still obvious. And I can see it from non stutterers point of view, many of them have not ever talked to a stutterer or even know what it is, and it’s awkward for them as they don’t know how to react. So often times they laugh and make a joke, they instinctually have the best reaction they know how in that circumstance. Just today (I work fast food) I went to hand out some food through the drive thru window, and stutterer, and the guy laughs and says “that one took you a minute huh? Take two.” Or some shit. While smiling. When I’m feeling up to it I usually try to tell people yeah I stutter and then they usually are very apologetic.
