That’s exactly what it means. Sounds like this guy hit you with a life lesson! It seems crazy, I know, but people who stutter are obsessed with their stuttering. It’s a catch 22, vicious cycle, etc. I had a similar experience today. I present at meetings regularly for my work. I had a meeting this morning and I felt that I was struggling through it. I was debriefing with a colleague about an hour ago and they said they thought my part of the meeting was great. I would have totally disagreed. I try to tell others this all the time (and myself) that virtually NOBODY cares about your stuttering except you. K-12 school can be hard because kids are stupid. But once you’re adult nobody cares anymore. People have their own problems. They’re not thinking about you struggling to order your food because they’re thinking about their sick child, or bills, or whatever burden they have in their own lives. Because life is hard, for everyone. Try to make the best of yours, regardless of stuttering.
