I found a really good speech therapist. The guy had his doctorate in the field. I actually went to him twice. Once in my teens. Then again in my mid-20s. In my teens I went for a few years. Very little improvement. When I went back in my '20s, I was able to achieve fluency within less than a year. The program was no different. My approach to therapy was different. When I went back in my '20s, I was committed to getting fluent. I did my homework everyday. I practiced. I really feel like I got lucky in finding such an excellent speech therapist I cringe when I read accounts here of people talking about techniques. As if just adjusting your breathing is going to get you fluent. The program I experienced was a complete relearning of speaking. Starting from the ground and working your way up. It wasn't trying to remove the stutter from My existing speech. It was learning fluent speech. It was probably 6 months before I used my fluency outside of the therapist office or my practicing alone.
