Complete and utter desensitization and destigmatizing of your stutter. Thinking about your stutter ‘primes’ (or warms up) the stuttering part of your brain, making you more likely to stutter. It’s a self-perpetuating cycle of thinking about stuttering turning into stuttering turning into thinking about stuttering. It’s not as easy as “oh just stop thinking about it”, but once you figure out how to do that, it really is that easy. What we, as a field of SLPs, don’t tell clients is that there is a standard developmental curve to acceptance and stuttering. Unfortunately, a lot of people quit progressing when the curve goes down, even though it’s necessary. The ages of 19-23 is when there is a ton of natural acceptance and growth with stutterers, but no one likes the answer of “oh just wait it out”. It moreso means that you are just in the bad part right now. It won’t stay like this long term, just treat yourself well and make choices that future you would be proud of. One day you won’t care that you stutter and you’ll regret the choices that you made because of your stutter
