Had some significant others have said this exactly "oh it's cute", while I agree with the other responses as well, I think in my case, it was because they knew it affected me severely even if I didn't show it. I think sometimes, when the person actually cares, they will overcompensate to (hopefully) not make you feel bad/awkward about stuttering, although for most of us that never works.
