New person in social group stutters to the point where he can’t speak Hi guys, I met a guy today who seems to have a lot of social anxiety and stutters to the point where he can’t even say a word. Hell open his mouth but nothing comes out and he’ll nervously laugh and try again. Another person in the group was saying take your time. I was wondering how to react in this situation. I didn’t smile or anything and just nodded because I didn’t want him to think I was laughing at him, but my friends was smiling at him. How should I react to make him feel comfortable and how can I encourage him to be more comfortable talking with us? Edit: thanks for all the advice guys. I know not to finish their sentences or anything. I guess the main point was should I smile and keep eye contact or just have a strident face? I don’t want him to think I’m annoyed or laughing at him. Also it was his brother saying Take your time. We hadn’t met either of them before so I think he was trying to comfort him. He was able to speak better after that.
