Cured my stuttering! Hey guys, I've wanted to share my experience of how i became free from stuttering and give you some tips that hopefully can help you as well. A month ago I went into therapy to fix my stuttering.It was 4 days with a group of other stutters and a speech therapist. The basic principle of the therapy was this; You don't have a speech problem, but a sensitivity problem. We stutters can speak perfectly normal when we're alone or talking to pets or little children. So to break free of stuttering we needed to focus on being indifferent to what people think of your speech. In order to help us do that we had been given some valuable insights to how normal speech works. Stutters desperatly want to speak fluently, they want to avoid stuttering or other imperfections at all cost (See also here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gjPNBugBVg @ 3 min in). This goal of us to speak fluently has made us focus on speaking words and letters. We try to talk by saying words and letters. Maybe when you were younger you even had to compile a list of words or letters that you struggled with, i know i did. But this focus actually is what causes you to stutter. Try singing by consciously pronouncing the words, or ask a natural speaker to talk by consciously pronouncing his words, it doesnt work. So how does natural speech work? Our therapy defined a law for speaking naturally: Producing conscious and random sounds that are formed unconscious and precise. Its just a matter of producing a sound, listening and connecting to it, and then forming it into what you want to say. There's absolutely no need to visualize words in your head so you can speak them, only a visual image of your thoughts. Also, when producing sounds you dont need to stop after every word, as if youre seeing a space inbetween words, you can say whole sentences using 1 sound. In order to feel more confident using our sound we've made sure that when we were producing it we would take the steering wheel so to say, and send the sound low, high or long, so you get the confirmation you are in complete control of your voice, Doing this when speaking has the added benefit of making you indifferent to what people think about your speech. In order to cement this knowledge in to our unconscious we also got various tools in the therapy to help us, like ration self affirmations (I can produce any sound I want when I want, All situations are equal etc) and REBT. The first few days were hard, but eventually I've began to enjoy standing out with my speech, and the inner-rest that lengthening sounds gave me was amazing.
