It probably just doesn’t translate in terms of business models in different countries. I live in a HCOL region with no connection to anywhere else (though I’m trying to get somewhere cheaper eventually) and I likely could not even qualify on my own for an apartment. I live with family and contribute to rent in my 30s. American financial firms heavily reward salespeople to the expense of many support roles, though this is changing somewhat. I’ve worked mostly for second rate firms as a career changer and have had co-workers who went bankrupt or had housing insecurity.
