Hi there! I'm sure massive blocks like that are familiar to lots of stutterers! I'm just going to tell you what I do. I'm not a speech therapist or anything but I am a stammerers and my own particular stammer is a bit of a blocking extravaganza! It may not be for everyone particularly if you are trying to avoid anyone knowing that you are sering and doing techniques but for me it works on that not so nice trapped sensation I get in the middle of a big block. It's hard to explain(and worth trying it on your own first) but I start making the sound before I even start forming the shape of the first word with my mouth. It's only quiet and when you make a noise with a relaxed mouth and chest it's just kind of like an "errrr" or an "uhhh" but I just find it gets the sound flowing and I can then turn it in to words??? I think starting both making sound and shaping words at the same time is tricky. I've been doing it for so long that on a good day it's hard to tell that the sound is coming first. Sometimes if that doesn't work I will start with a big breath and the push out about half the air and kind of let the words start towards the end of that breath. Otherwise, words can be stubborn and never quite seem to want to be the first out! It doesn't work if I try and go straight into really big full speech but if after doing the noise or the breath I start with slightly more relaxed face than I would normally speak with I can kind of gradually get up to normal over the course of the sentence. I appreciate that some stammerers want to hide the fact that they have a stammer which is totally understandable if that's what's right for you but it can sometimes be helpful for me, particularly with blocks, to kind of soften the trickier sounds of some words, almost like your speaking with pudding in your mouth, until I can get past that initial block and into the swing of things. It might make speech sound a little bit strange in those moments where a bit of softening up of sounds is needed but I find it's feels better when I can keep a bit more of a flow than when all the sounds are clear and bang on. If anything, these little tweaks make my speech sound interesting and a little more me! I hope this helps, Good luck! X
