I'm an intern as a software developer and my team is fairly small, but the whole company is extremely social. When I meet someone new (often every day), I usually block when I say my name, so I tell them I stammer (as an explanation for the block). They really don't care. As for my team - they also don't care, and give me time to say what I need to say. We have a group chat between all team members in our local office, and with team members from around the world. If I'm uncomfortable speaking aloud to somebody who sits a few desks beside me, I can just message them through the chat room.
