Does speech therapy actually help?

Does speech therapy actually help? I've been taking therapy for about 9 months without seeing much improvement. My speech therapist says that this is normal and I'll begin to see improvement after at the end of therapy, when we get to the point where we include speaking to strangers as a part of my therapy. The question is: Did you see improvement in fluency after fully completing speech therapy ??
