Aaaand just like that you discovered what eastern meditation philosophy, esp, the buddhists and hindus have been teaching for thousands of years. Its a fascinating topic which I've also started getting familiar with. If you listen to Sunny Sharma in yt, he talks about lot of this stuff. As PWS, we let the world dictate our internal state of being, we let other people's judgment define if at any give moment we feel happy, or sad or angry, etc. What you're calling "I" is your awareness. Like you said, your awareness does not have emotions, it's only job is to "observe". Your awareness is the essence of your being, and it is detached from your emotions, your mental diagloge, and other external happenings. By simply observing everything, without any judgement, without putting any negative or positive labels to anything, we start living in the present... we basically start experience each moment to its fullest. Once we start turning inward, we will no longer need external validation. We will show our true selves to the world, without hiding or pretending to be anything we're not.
